Carnegie Mellon History
Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh was started by Andrew Carnegie, who loved books and believed in working hard. The university was created to help working-class men and women in the city learn useful skills and trades that would improve their jobs and lives. As the need grew, Carnegie Technical Schools began to offer bachelor's degrees through its College of Engineering and College of Fine Arts, and it became known as the Carnegie Institute of Technology.
In the 20th century, the university grew from just two buildings to a beautiful campus with modern facilities. In 1914, it became the first university in the US to award a drama degree. Carnegie Mellon started offering graduate programs in the 1910s and gave its first doctorate in Civil Engineering to a Chinese student in 1919. This degree helped the university become a research center, attracting top scientists, providing fellowships with government and industry leaders, and encouraging research across different fields.
