Mcgill University - Overview & Background

Located in Quebec, Canada, McGill University is a public university established in 1821.

The college has two campuses:

The two campuses are about 20 miles from each other. Its primary campus is in downtown Montreal at Mount Royal. About one-fourth of the student body is international, with learners coming from over 150 nations. University accommodation is available in both the campuses for undergraduate and graduate students. The university is affiliated with various teaching hospitals, its medical school is the oldest in Canada.

More than 40 McGill study centres which include the McGill Centre for Bioinformatics, the Centre on Population Dynamics and the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and other associated institutes and hospitals conduct research at the college. One of the study achievements connected with the university is the development of the first artificial blood cell. Montreal also won the first place as the world’s most student-friendly town in 2017 QS Best Student Cities.

Mcgill University Location

Montreal is a big town in the southwest of Quebec's Canadian province.  In 2012, QS University Rankings named Montreal as the 10th best location in the globe for a university student. McGill University has excellent airport connectivity on the highway from all sides. The nearest major airport is Montréal / Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU / CYHU), which is 18 km from McGill University and has national flights from Montreal, Canada. Another major airport is Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL / CYUL), which is 21 km from McGill University and has global and national flights from Montreal, Canada.

The university can be readily accessed by bus, vehicle, taxi or shuttle from these airports. There is a free bus service to and from McGill for students coming from Sainte-Foy, Trois-Rivières and Gatineau. Students can also use a government bicycle sharing system called Bixi Bikes. The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) 747 Express runs a bus to McGill University from Montreal (YUL) every 10 minutes, and it takes 25 minutes to get there.

Every four hours, VIA Rail runs a train from Ottawa (YOW) to McGill University, and the trip takes one hour and a half. The OPUS card is a rechargeable metro card that is an excellent instrument for those who may not reside close campus or plan to regularly (or even semi-regularly) use the metro system. The vibrant cultural scene of Montreal, high-quality universities, competitive tuition and excellent job prospects have made the university a wonderful place to study.
