Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (Pratt School of Engineering) is known for its world-class faculty in biotechnology that prepares graduates for the challenging world of industry. The faculty seeks to train students in a laboratory environment to inculcate in them the confidence and skills required for solving real-world problems in the biotech industry. Focus areas are Modeling, Analysis, Design of Molecular and Cellular Systems.

The two-pronged approach of the department is the analysis of living systems on one hand and interdisciplinary study and development of technology for biomedical sciences on the other hand.

The graduate BME program was ranked 3 by U.S. News & World Report. Till now, 2 companies have been founded by Duke BME faculty. The university's BME department was awarded $32.7 million in new research awards in the fiscal year of 2018, and $535 million is granted in the follow-on funding for 44 Duke-Coulter partnership projects.

Civil and Environmental

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has its roots going back to more than one and a half-century. Ever since its inception in 1927, the department has taken pride in contributing to the society by producing some of the finest, most creative and sensitive civil engineers and researchers. Today it lays focus on engineering sustainable designs and training young minds to provide solutions that do not harm the environment.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has focused on ascertaining and analyzing the minutest impacts of new technologies on the environment. Besides, it has also concentrated on making the prevailing technologies and engineering methods environment-friendly. The Interdisciplinary character of the programs and a wide variety of courses to choose from allow students to tailor their study according to their interests as well as industry needs.

The environmental graduate program was ranked among the top 10 by U.S. News & World Report and was ranked 17 in U.S. civil engineering scholarly productivity by Academic Analytics. Till now 2 companies have been founded by the Duke BME faculty. The department was awarded $6.8 million in new research awards in the fiscal year of 2018 and became Home to NSF Center for the Environmental Implications of NanoTechnology

Electrical and Computer

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has earned the reputation of being a destination where the toughest challenges in the world of electrical engineering are taken head-on. The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science is the foremost destination for innovation and invention through imagination.
