The Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship was created to assist students pursuing a higher degree through research (HDR). The scholarship is applicable to 42 of Australia's most prestigious universities and covers overseas tuition fees as well as a stipend.

    Eligibility Criteria 

    To be considered for an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship (AGRTPS), a student must:

  • list items Be a citizen of any country except New Zealand, and should not be holding Australian citizenship, Australian permanent resident status, or New Zealand citizenship; and
  • list items Intend to begin full-time study for a higher degree by research in Australia for the first time in the year for which the award is to be offered. Students who started their higher degree by research the previous year but were unable to apply for an AGRTPS because of the timing of their application for admission and subsequent enrolment, or who started a higher degree by research but dropped out within six months of starting, may be eligible; and
  • list items To be considered for an Australian Government Research Scholarship, you must plan to enroll in a research concentration. These are areas where the University has a particular strength, where research resources have been concentrated, where external funding has been attracted; and
  • list items Satisfy all entry requirements for a higher degree by research, including English proficiency levels in accordance with the English Language Proficiency Requirements for HDR Candidature.

    There are no restrictions that prevent any applicant from applying for an RTP slot at more than one university, or at the same university more than once. So, yes you can apply to the RTP at more than one university, or more than once at the same university. 

    Am I eligible for RTP support if I choose to undertake a research doctorate or research master's degree at an overseas university?

    No, you must be enrolled at an approved Australian university to be eligible for the RTP.

    Does the department provide an RTP application form?

    No, RTP applications must be submitted directly to a participating university.
