One of the FES's basic principles was the development of youthful talent.
With the establishment of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in 1925, the first FES scholarships were offered to exceptionally gifted young people from working-class backgrounds who were actively participating in the Weimar Republic's fledgling democracy.
One of the goals of the organization is to eliminate social disadvantages by helping students who actively strive for freedom, justice, and social cohesion as part of their commitment to social democracy, or who will do so in the future.

The duration of the application process for the FES scholarship program is 4-7 months. Application mode:
1. Self-application:
Please make use of the Internet's "Online Application" - only in German! Additional sheet
2. One-on-one interviews:
All the selected candidates will then be invited to two individual interviews in the following phase. The first interview will be conducted by one of the FES lecturers, and the second interview will be conducted by one of the FES scholarship committee members (AWA). Based on these interviews, two reports are created and delivered to the AWA.
3. AWA discussion and ultimate decision:
The AWA will ultimately make a decision on the basis of your application. The AWA is an autonomous organization comprised of university teachers as well as others from science, politics, art, and media. The committee meets at least three times a year. The AWA will debate every application in great detail and then make the final decision.
4. Written notification:
You will be notified of the AWA's decision.
