Application Process for Duke University

Step 1: Prepare Your Documents

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

Applicants need to provide three letters of recommendation. One should be from a guidance counselor, and two should be from teachers who have taught you in major academic courses like English, mathematics, social studies, sciences, or foreign languages, preferably within the last two years of secondary school. If you are applying to the Pratt School of Engineering, make sure at least one recommendation is from a math or science teacher. You can also submit one personal recommendation (this is optional).

Essays

Applicants must submit a one-page personal essay. This includes both Long Essays (for the Common App) and Short Essays (specific to Duke). For the long essay, choose one of the seven prompts on the Common App website and write up to 650 words. The short essay prompts are specific to your field of study:

• Engineering Applicants: Discuss why you want to study engineering and why you wish to study at Duke (150 words max).
• Arts & Sciences Applicants: Explain why you think Duke is a good fit for you. What attracts you to Duke? (150 words max)
• Optional for All Applicants: Share any perspectives or experiences that help us understand you better, possibly related to a community you belong to or your family or cultural background (250 words max).
