Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

• One letter from your guidance counselor.
• Two letters from teachers who taught you in key subjects like English, mathematics, social studies, sciences, or foreign languages, preferably in the last two years of high school.
• If applying to the Pratt School of Engineering, at least one recommendation should be from a math or science teacher.
• You can also submit one personal recommendation (this is optional).

Essays

You need to submit a one-page personal essay. This includes:

• Long Essay: Choose one of the seven prompts on the Common App website and write a 650-word essay.
• Short Essays: These are specific to your field of study:
• For Engineering applicants: Explain why you want to study engineering and why you want to study at Duke. (150 words max)
• For Arts & Sciences applicants: Discuss why Duke is a good match for you and what attracts you to Duke. (150 words max)
• Optional for all applicants: Share any unique perspective or experience that helps us understand you better. This could relate to a community you belong to, your family, or cultural background. (250 words max)

Step Two: Additional Documents Required

• Official transcripts for all academic work completed in high school.
• Proof of SAT or ACT test scores.
• Proof of English Language proficiency.
