Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

You need to submit three letters of recommendation:

• One from your guidance counselor
• Two from teachers who have taught you in core subjects like English, math, social studies, sciences, or foreign languages in the last two years of high school

If you are applying to the Pratt School of Engineering, ensure at least one recommendation is from a math or science teacher. You may also include one personal recommendation, which is optional.

Essays

Submit a one-page personal essay, which includes:

• Long Essay: Choose one prompt from the seven available on the Common App website and write a 650-word essay.
• Short Essays: Specific to your field of study.
• Engineering Applicants: Explain why you want to study engineering and why at Duke (150 words max).
• Arts & Sciences Applicants: Discuss why Duke is a good match for you and what attracts you to the university (150 words max).
• Optional for All Applicants: Share any unique perspectives or experiences, possibly related to your community, family, or cultural background (250 words max).

• Official transcripts for all high school academic work
• SAT/ACT test scores
