Key Insights

  • list items We believe in the power of teamwork. Our small class sizes and close community allow students to support each other and work together on assignments. Asking questions in class is easy, and sometimes it's even better to have the whole class at the blackboard.
  • list items We may not always know if an idea will work, but we are willing to try. Science is all about testing and learning from mistakes. As Professor Thomas Moses says, "If you only take the good steps, you don't see how smart those steps are." Take Jeff Smith '01, for example. He built a tabletop particle accelerator while studying at Knox.
  • list items While it wasn't fully working, he learned a lot from the experience. Jeff later earned a Ph.D. in accelerator physics at Cornell University. In their sophomore research lab, students get to create their own experiments, and many work on projects that have been ongoing for more than ten years (ask us about our wind tunnel!).
  • list items We are always creating and improving. The Knox Engineering Club started with a few students who took over an old storage area, and they have kept growing ever since. Now, they have 3D printers, a CNC mill, a laser cutter, a metal lathe, soldering stations, and much more.
