Application Process for State University of New York at New Paltz

Step One: Prepare Documents for Application

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Submit a Statement of Purpose with a maximum of 4,000 characters. This essay will be evaluated on content, style, grammar, and structure, especially for art programs. Students should write their essay in a word processing program and then copy and paste it into the application space. In the SOP, describe aspects of your work that your portfolio does not show. Share your past experiences, creative interests, and future goals as an artist or designer. Keep the statement clear and concise, with a limit of 4,000 characters.

Letter of Recommendation (LOR)

Submit a letter of recommendation from an academic teacher or school counselor.

Essays

Submit an admission essay (personal statement) as part of the SUNY Supplemental Application or the Common Application. You can use the SUNY International Applicant Essay form and choose any topic for your autobiographical essay.
