Step One: Prepare Documents for Application

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

A 1-2 page document is required. Applicants can choose one of two approaches for writing their personal statement:

• Chronological: Start with a brief paragraph about your childhood and school years, unless something important happened that relates to your studies. Discuss your research interests and any previous projects or experiences that inspired you to pursue graduate study. Avoid talking about previous institutions or faculty unless something significant occurred that is not well-known in your field.
• Thematic: Organize your statement around one or two main ideas that connect to your research field or major interest.

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

You need three Letters of Recommendation. These should be uploaded by the recommender in the application form. Each letter must:

• Be on official letterhead
• Include personal contact information and a signature
• Have a current date

An academic reference is preferred. A letter from an employer can be helpful if it relates to your field, but otherwise, it may not be useful. Each LOR should be between 2/3 of a page and one full page.

CV/Resume

A 1-2 page CV or Resume is required. This should summarize your qualifications, honors, education, and interests. It should ideally include:
