Those without a B.S. degree in civil engineering must show they completed specific undergraduate courses: mathematics through differential equations, one semester of chemistry, one semester of calculus-based physics, and one semester of engineering statics.

Step One: Prepare Documents for Application

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

A 1-2 page document is required. Applicants can choose from two approaches for writing their personal statement:

• Chronological: Use one paragraph to discuss childhood and school years unless something significant happened that relates to your studies. Include your research interests and any past projects or experiences that sparked your desire for graduate study. Avoid discussing previous institutions or faculty unless there is something exceptional to mention.
• Thematic: Organize the statement around one or two key ideas related to your research field or main interest.

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

Three letters of recommendation are required. These can be uploaded by the recommender directly into the application form. Each letter must be on official letterhead, include personal contact information, a signature, and a current date. An academic reference is preferred. Letters from employers can be helpful if the job relates to the field you are applying for, but otherwise, they may not be useful. LORs should be between 2/3 of a page and one page long.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A one to two page CV or resume is required. This should summarize your qualifications, honors, education, and interests. Ideally, it should include:
