Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Applicants need to submit a 1-2 page document. There are two main ways to write it:

• Chronological: Use one paragraph to discuss childhood and school years unless something important relates to your studies. Include your research interests and any past projects or experiences that sparked your interest in graduate study. It’s not necessary to mention previous schools or teachers unless something remarkable happened that is not widely known.
• Thematic: This version focuses on one or two key ideas that connect to your research field or main interest.

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

You need three letters of recommendation. These should be uploaded by the recommenders in the application form. Letters must:

• Be on official letterhead
• Include the recommender's contact information and signature
• Have the current date

An academic reference is preferred. A letter from an employer can be useful if the job relates to your field, but otherwise, such letters are not very helpful. Each LOR should be between 2/3 of a page and one page long.
