Step One: Prepare Documents for Application

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

A 1-2 page document is required. Applicants can choose between two main approaches for writing their personal statement:

• Chronological: Discuss your childhood and school years in no more than one paragraph, unless something extraordinary happened that relates to your studies. Write about your research interests and any previous projects or experiences that inspired your desire to pursue graduate study in your field. Avoid discussing past institutions or faculty unless there is something significant that may not be known to the scientific or professional community.
• Thematic: Organize your statement around one or two main ideas that connect to your research field or major interest.

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

Three letters of recommendation are required. These letters can be uploaded by the recommender in the application form. Each letter must be on official letterhead, include the recommender's contact information, a signature, and the current date. An academic reference is preferred, but a letter from an employer can be useful if the job relates to the field you are applying for. LORs should be between 2/3 of a page and one page long.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A CV or resume of one to two pages is required. This document should summarize your qualifications, honors, education, and interests. A good resume should include:
