Step One: Prepare Documents for Application

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

A 1-2 page document is required. Applicants can choose one of two approaches for writing their personal statement:

• Chronological: Use no more than one paragraph to discuss your childhood and school years unless something special happened that connects to your studies. Include your research interests and any past projects or experiences that sparked your desire for graduate study in your field. There is no need to mention previous schools or professors unless something important occurred that might not be known to the wider academic community.
• Thematic: Organize your statement around one or two main ideas related to your research field or major interest.

Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

Three letters of recommendation are required. These can be uploaded directly by the recommender in the application form. Letters must be on official letterhead, include the recommender's contact information, a signature, and the current date. An academic reference is preferred. A letter from an employer can be useful if the job relates to the field you are applying for, but otherwise, such letters may not be as helpful. Each LOR should be between 2/3 of a page and one page long.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A 1-2 page CV or resume is required. This should summarize your qualifications, honors, education, and interests. A good resume should include:
