Step One: Prepare Documents for Application

Gather the following documents needed for your application:

• Letters of Recommendation (LOR): You need an academic recommendation letter from a school counselor or teacher.
• Essays: A personal essay is required. Choose one of the following topics and write about 500 words:
• Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or an ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.
• Discuss personal, local, national, or international issues that matter to you.
• Indicate a person who has influenced you and describe that influence.
• Describe a character from fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (like art, music, science) that has influenced you and explain how.
• Share an experience that shows what you can contribute to the diversity in a college community or an event that highlighted the importance of diversity for you.
• Choose another topic of your preference.

Step Two: Additional Documents Required

Submit the following additional documents:

• An official high school record, leaving certificate, and/or graduation examination results or notarized copies.
• All documents in foreign languages must be translated by a certified professional.
• Proof of English language proficiency.
• SAT/ACT scores (if applicable).
• Certification of Finances Form: This shows your ability to pay for education and living expenses while studying at UMass Boston.
• A letter of support in English from sponsors, unless you are using personal funds, with the Certification of Finances Form. This letter should accept responsibility for all your expenses during your studies.
• A current copy of your sponsor's bank statement.
