What are the benefits of University of Saskatchewan Indigenous Graduate Leadership Award

The University of Saskatchewan Indigenous Graduate Leadership Award grants INR 16,66,547 for graduation and INR 20,83,183 for doctoral students. The award may be retained by students who transfer for a maximum of 24 months at the Master's level and a maximum of 36 months at the PhD level from a Master's programme.

What is the eligibility criteria for University of Saskatchewan Indigenous Graduate Leadership Award

A student may not hold two major institutional scholarships within their institution at the same time, or one major institutional scholarship and one major external scholarship, as specified in the CGPS policy on Centrally Administered Funding. A major scholarship is one that pays at least INR 14,58,228 annually. Major scholarships may be combined with top-up awards and discounted honorary scholarships. Any such funding that you receive must be reported to the College of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

The applicant must be a graduate student who is enrolled in classes at the University of Saskatchewan or who is submitting an application for admission. To qualify, the applicant needs to:

  • list items Be a Canadian Métis, Inuit, or First Nations person, regardless of status.
  • list items Obtain admission to or register with a Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies College a PhD or master's degree
  • list items Possess a GPA of at least 75%.
  • list items Show off your leadership by getting involved in the community and/or engaging in active engagement (see examples below) 
  • list items Receive the award during the first 60 months of a PhD programme or the first 36 months of a Master's programme.
  • Leadership may include: 

  • list items Band counseling or other roles
  • list items Participation in the community
  • list items Achievements in entrepreneurship
  • list items Significant participation and accomplishment in professional or academic associations, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, in fields like business, science, sports, and the arts
  • list items Apprenticeships, internships, or other programmes involving experiential learning
  • list items Involvement in committees, teams, the senate, boards, ethics committees, and other academic communities or student government
  • list items Roles in a family, culture, or Indigenous community as leaders
  • list items Experience in teaching, mentoring, and supervising
  • list items Planning of community events, conferences, meetings, and courses
  • list items Initiatives for cooperation, capacity building, and project management
  • list items Positions in professional and academic societies
  • list items Study and travel in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous nations and communities

    The documents required for University of Saskatchewan Indigenous Graduate Leadership Award are- 

  • list items A one-page written submission outlining how you satisfy the eligibility requirements
  • list items An oral presentation detailing your eligibility requirements and lasting no more than five minutes (video or audio only). To show reverence and respect for Indigenous communities' oral traditions, oral submissions may involve drumming, dancing, singing, talking, or showcasing cultural artifacts.
  • list items Two reference letters (one from the community and one from the academic community)
  • list items A one-page synopsis of your academic work and/or research contributions
  • list items copies of the official transcripts from every university attended; the University of Saskatchewan may accept unofficial transcripts.
  • All written submissions need to adhere to the following formatting specifications:

  • list items One page at most, measuring no more than 8 ½" by 11". All text needs to be in 12 point font. Condensed typefaces will not be accepted; use Times New Roman instead.
  • list items The maximum margin that can be used is 1.
  • list items Reference letters can be sent to gradstudies.awards@usask.ca in confidence via email. All written applications must adhere to the instructions provided in the application package.
  • Applications that are not complete won't be accepted or taken into consideration.

    The oral submission can be made via a YouTube link on the application and needs to be formatted as an mp4 (video submission) or an mp3 (audio submission). gradstudies.awards@usask.ca is another way to get in touch with them, and they will send you a link to a secure document-sharing website.
