Central Washington University

Overview

Central Washington University (CWU) was established in 1891 and is located in Ellensburg, Washington. It started as the Washington State Normal School and became a college in 1937. In 1977, it was renamed to Central Washington University. CWU is recognized by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).

The university has a large 380-acre campus that features modern buildings and facilities. Students have access to a Recreation Center that includes a jogging track, gymnasium, climbing wall, and various fitness areas. Other facilities on campus include an Aquatic Center, sports complexes, and tennis facilities, providing students with ample opportunities for recreation and sports.

CWU offers housing options in 17 residence halls, accommodating around 2,800 students. The university also has apartment complexes with amenities such as water, electricity, TV, and high-speed internet. Additional facilities include a bookstore, health center, library, Veterans Center, and dining areas. The campus radio station, 88.1 The Burg, is also operated by the university.

The university provides around 300 degree programs across various fields such as humanities, business, design, performing arts, sciences, and law. Currently, there are about 12,342 students enrolled, with a balanced gender ratio. CWU maintains a low student-teacher ratio, ensuring personalized attention for each student.

Students can join over 125 clubs and organizations that cater to different interests. CWU is part of the NCAA Division II and offers many sports, including football, basketball, and soccer. There are 23 sports clubs and varsity teams competing under the Wildcats name.

CWU has a notable list of alumni, including successful individuals in sports, entertainment, and business. Alumni include Mike Reilly, Keith Gilbertson, and Miesha Tate, showcasing the university's diverse impact on various fields.
