Dakota State University (DSU) was founded in 1881, making it one of the oldest universities in the U.S. It started as a school for teacher education and has evolved over the years. In 1902, its name changed from Madison Normal School to Madison State Normal School. Later, in 1969, it became Dakota State College, and in 1989, it was renamed Dakota State University to include new graduate programs.
