Overview

Albany State University (ASU) is a public university located in Albany, Georgia. Founded in 1903 by Dr. Joseph Winthrop Holley, it serves a predominantly black student body. In 2017, ASU merged with Darton State University, becoming part of the University System of Georgia. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, ensuring high educational standards.

ASU has two campuses: one in Albany and another in Cordele. The university follows a semester-based academic calendar, which includes summer, fall, and spring semesters. The James Pendergrast Memorial Library, which opened in 1994, is a modern facility with over 205,000 academic books and journals. It can seat more than 600 students, providing a great space for studying and research.

The university is made up of three colleges: the Darton College of Health Professionals, which offers programs in Nursing and Health Sciences; the College of Professional Studies, which includes divisions for Business, Criminal Justice, Education, and Social Work; and the College of Arts and Sciences, which offers programs in subjects like Biology, Chemistry, English, and Political Science.

Albany State University also provides online learning options in various subjects such as Accounting, Business Administration, and Communications. The university encourages students to participate in sports and has a competitive football team known as the 'Golden Rams,' competing at the NCAA Division II level. Other men's sports include basketball, baseball, and track and field, while women's sports include basketball, soccer, and volleyball.

Notable alumni of Albany State University include actress Jo Marie Payton, former NFL player Dan Land, Olympic gold medalist Alice Coachman, and Shirley Sherrod, who was the former director of the rural development department of Agriculture.
