Overview

Kettering University, founded in 1919, was first known as The School of Automobile Trades. It was established in Flint, Michigan, with the aim of training engineering and management professionals. In 1923, the institution became the Flint Institute of Technology, which introduced a cooperative education program and had over 600 students enrolled. In 1926, General Motors Corporation began supporting the school financially, renaming it the General Motors Institute and focusing on producing engineers and managers. The institute added a thesis requirement in 1945 and became a degree-granting college while continuing its cooperative education commitment.

In 1982, General Motors stepped away from its responsibility for the school, which was then renamed GMI Engineering and Management Institute. That same year, the university began offering graduate programs for both on-campus and off-campus students. Kettering University aims to connect hands-on learning experiences with academic programs in engineering, science, mathematics, and business. It also plans to increase enrollment with financial aid packages and fixed tuition to attract talented students needed in a changing job market.

Kettering's campus spans approximately 90 acres along the Flint River and includes five main buildings and four other facilities. The university offers 13 undergraduate degree programs and 11 graduate programs, including five fully online degrees. The academic divisions consist of the College of Engineering, the College of Sciences and Liberal Arts, the School of Management, and the Graduate School.

With over 120 full-time faculty members, Kettering University excels in research areas such as cancer research, renewable energy, and entrepreneurship. Since 2010, it has received 12 Major Research Instrumentation grants from the National Science Foundation, a record for any university in Michigan at that time.

Kettering University is also known for providing many scholarship opportunities for students in STEM and business fields. New undergraduate students can apply for various scholarships in addition to merit grants. All incoming students for the 2020-2021 academic year are eligible to apply for additional financial support.

Graduates from Kettering University hold significant positions in various industries. Notable alumni include Mary Barra, the CEO of General Motors; Raj Nair, a former Group Vice President at Ford Motor Company; and Bob Kagle, a successful venture capitalist who was an early investor in eBay and Instagram.
