Overview

Northern State University (NSU) is an open university located in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Established in 1901, it originally started as the Northern Normal and Industrial School. By 1939, it became known as Northern State Teachers College, focusing on offering bachelor's degrees. The institution underwent another name change in 1964 to Northern State College, reflecting its growth in student numbers and programs. In 1989, it was officially named Northern State University, recognizing its status as a comprehensive university under the South Dakota Board of Regents. The university's campus spans approximately 72 acres and includes several key facilities, such as the Student Center, which is the hub for student services and activities. The Beulah Williams Library is another important building, providing a vast collection of books and resources, along with study rooms and multimedia stations. NSU offers 38 major programs, 42 minor programs, 6 associate degrees, 8 pre-professional programs, and 9 graduate degrees. It is ranked as the second-best small college town in America, with more than 3,600 students and around 120 academic staff members. NSU has an active Student Government Association that represents the student body and oversees various student organizations and clubs. The university also publishes a community newspaper called The Exponent, which serves students, faculty, and the surrounding area. Additionally, NSU has a Center for Statewide E-Learning, offering online courses and high school programs to students. The university's athletic teams, known as the Wolves, compete in 13 intercollegiate sports, including basketball, soccer, wrestling, and swimming. NSU is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, promoting a strong athletic culture on campus. Over the years, thousands of students have graduated from NSU, including notable alumni such as Ronnie Cruz (former Dallas Cowboys player), Elmer Diedtrich (businessman and legislator), and Jim Hundstad (politician). The university continues to be a significant contributor to the education landscape in South Dakota.
