Northern State University (NSU) is an open university located in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Established in 1901, it originally started as the Northern Normal and Industrial School. By 1939, it became known as Northern State Teachers College, focusing on offering bachelor's degrees. The institution underwent another name change in 1964 to Northern State College, reflecting its growth in student numbers and programs. In 1989, it was officially named Northern State University, recognizing its status as a comprehensive university under the South Dakota Board of Regents.
