University of Florida History
The University of Florida started as a group of separate schools that later came together as one university. The East Florida Seminary was the first school set up by the Florida Legislature and became the first place for higher education in Florida. It was located in Ocala until the start of the American Civil War in 1861. In 1886, the East Florida Seminary reopened in Gainesville and included the Gainesville Academy. The Florida Agricultural College was the first land-grant college in Florida.
In 1903, the Florida Legislature changed the name of Florida Agricultural College to the University of Florida.
