Overview

Western Kentucky University (WKU) was established in 1906 by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This public university is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Originally founded by A.W. Mell, the university's roots trace back to 1876. It was relocated to Bowling Green in 1884 and renamed Southern Normal School and Business College.

WKU is made up of five academic colleges: The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, The Gordon Ford College of Business, Ogden College of Science and Engineering, Potter College of Arts and Letters, and The College of Health and Human Services. These colleges provide students with a choice of eighty majors and seventy minors, covering fields such as Engineering, Arts, Fine Arts, Sciences, Nursing, Social Work, and Music.

WKU is notable for its master's program in folklore, making it one of the few institutions in Kentucky dedicated to preserving and studying the historical traditions of the state and the nation. Additionally, it introduced a doctoral program in educational leadership in 2009, expanding its academic offerings further.

The university has a diverse student body, with 83% of students identifying as Black, Hispanic, Asian, or other backgrounds. About 70% of students come from in-state, while 29% are from out-of-state. The majority of the student population is 24 years old or younger, making up 90% of the enrollment. WKU has a strong graduation rate, ensuring that students receive quality education and support.
