Types of IELTS

There are two main types of IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exams:

  • IELTS General Training: This version of the test is primarily intended for individuals who are planning to migrate to English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada, the UK, or New Zealand. It is also suitable for those seeking to enroll in secondary education, vocational training programs, or work-related training courses in an English-speaking environment. The IELTS General Training assesses everyday language skills used in social and workplace settings, such as communication in common situations, understanding instructions, and basic reading and writing tasks.
  • IELTS Academic: The IELTS Academic test is designed for students who are applying for higher education programs at universities or colleges, typically at the undergraduate or postgraduate level. It is also accepted for professional purposes, such as medical or nursing licensure in some countries. The IELTS Academic evaluates your ability to understand and use complex academic language, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills that are relevant to academic and professional settings.

Both types of IELTS exams assess your English language proficiency but have different content and are designed to meet the specific language requirements of their respective target purposes. Test-takers should choose the type of IELTS exam that best aligns with their academic or immigration goals.
